Chirps from the coop

Time flies when you’re doing what you love. In our first year at Chicken, we’ve helped councils and partners create accessible, sustainable websites — proving that a small, focused team can make a big difference.

Projects that Make a Difference

We started out with some brilliant organisations who trusted us from the beginning:

  • London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham  migrating away from closed, expensive platforms and saving money with LocalGov Drupal.
  • Ricardo Energy & Environment building a new site that hosts the Air Pollution Footprint Toolkit, helping communities understand and reduce their environmental impact.
  • LocalGov Drupal  releasing the first version of the Publications module, replacing clunky PDFs with accessible web content.

These projects set the tone for what Chicken is all about: practical, people-centred solutions that save councils money while improving services for communities.

Contributing to the LocalGov Drupal Community

We’re not just users of LocalGov Drupal — we’re active contributors. Developing and releasing the Publications module was a milestone for us, and it’s already helping councils across the UK provide more accessible content.
Closer to home, we also relaunched Drupal Drinks Bristol, a monthly meetup for developers, designers, and anyone who wants to share ideas, show their work, and build connections.

Our Way of Working

Chicken was founded on collaboration and care. We’ve grown a supportive network of developers, freelancers, and friends who share knowledge on everything from accessibility to tax returns (with a side of music chat and the best blackberry spots in Bristol).

This way of working, transparent, cooperative, and human is what helps us deliver value for councils. And as we explore becoming a co-operative business, we’re excited about creating even stronger partnerships and pooling skills for the future.

Looking Ahead

One year in, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved but we’re even more excited about what’s to come.

  • More councils and communities benefiting from LocalGov Drupal.
  • Stronger open-source contributions that make digital public services easier to run.
  • New collaborations with people and organisations who share our values.

We design and build digital tools that make life easier for councils and their communities. Here’s to year two and beyond.
